we were children of nineteen and twenty

\nsigns and skulls warning of danger on either side

\nbullets smacking the belly out of the air

we scattered, most hiding behind rocks
\nwhile i paused to look and listen
\nmy friends called out are you ok
\ni searched for the shooters

and took cover behind the rocks
\nthinking how few we were
\nif i could not think our way out of this
\nour lives would be footnotes in the annals of this war<\/p>\n
i heard
\nthe harsh clacking of a Kalashnikov
\nthe crackling like distant fireworks of an M-16
\nonly two rifles firing
\nweapons practice on a deserted mountainside<\/p>\n
i waited for the inevitable cigarette break
\nand charged down the hill screaming
\nfollowed by two nurses who i would have left behind
\nfor their own safety<\/p>\n
we lived
\nand smoked our cigarettes
